Commissioned by the Division Support Command, 1st Cavalry Division, Ft. Hood, Texas.
Near today's Meeker, Colorado
Surrounded by Ute braves, units from the 3rd, 5th and 9th Cavalry fight from their circled supply wagons. Pinned down for nine days with the loss of thirteen men and most of their animals, the troopers and wagonmasters lay down a covering fire for Sgt. Johnson (9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers) who is returning with water from nearby Milk Creek. Sgt. Johnson and ten others received the Medal of Honor for this action.
