Buffalo Soldiers of the western frontier faced many difficulties. However, they cherished brief moments spent with loved ones. Robert Summers captures one of those special moments, during a morning when the western golden sun accompanies a Buffalo Soldier and his special girl on a riverside stroll. That special moment, no matter how brief, had to be a Golden Moment.

African-American soldiers served with George Washington in the Revolutionary War, fought the British at New Orleans in 1815 under Andrew Jackson, but their greatest sacrifice was during the Civil War. Of 180,00 black soldiers who served in the Army, 33,380 gave their lives.
The Civil War ended in April 1865, and on July 28, 1866, Congress voted to add four all-black infantry regiments to the Army, (they were reorganized in 1869 into the 24th and 25th infantry regiments), and two cavalry regiments (the 9th and 10th). These units compiled a distinguished record of military accomplishments in a vast territory including parts of Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona. They earned the reputation as fierce fighters, and out of respect the native American soldiers called them Buffalo Soldiers.
