Sun flashing off sabers held overhead, the mounted cavalry charges toward the enemy.
What a glorious image, thanks to Hollywood.
In reality, there were some skirmishes where sabers were used, but in the seventy years of the U.S. Cavalry, there was never a genuine charge.
However, the cavalry was being taught a new maneuver.
Instead of using the saber in a slashing motion, it was to be held straight out in front of them, as if to pierce.
